Community Elementary 5th Grade Gets Local History Lesson
On May 9th, over 100 students received a large dose of local history. The fifth graders from Community 5th Grade Field TripElementary took a day off from studying to experience Coffeyville and what the town has to offer to local tourists. “Although Coffeyville citizens are aware of their history not everyone has experienced the attractions we have to offer,” said Kirsten Stotts, Tourism Director for the Coffeyville Area Chamber of Commerce. The students experienced the Dalton Museum, the Brown Mansion, and also took a walking tour of downtown Coffeyville. Lou Barndollar challenged the students to a scavenger hunt in the Dalton Museum where the winning teams were rewarded with prizes such as t-shirts and newspaper replicas from the museum gift shop. The tours at the Brown Mansion were conducted by Darla Thornburg and 5th Grade Field Trip Trudie Kritz. The students were able to tour the three floors of the mansion, and also the basement. On the walking tour, the students followed the footsteps of the Daltons through the Perkins building and down Death Alley where they saw the Old Jail and the Don Sprague mural of the men who defended Coffeyville during the Dalton Gang raid. The students then experienced five other Sprague murals around the Perkins building and concluded outside Isham’s Hardware at the map of attractions. Although the day was busy, it was full of fun and history for a large group of Coffeyville kids.

This year will be no different although the location will change. Farmers are welcome to bring their produce to the parking lot at 9th & Elm on Saturday mornings starting the first weekend in June. The market will run through the month of October. For more information, please contact Downtown Coffeyville Inc. at 620-988-0808.
